Please Remember:

  • You must call the burn hotline before burning to ensure no ban in effect (248) 628-3870

  • All fires must be tended to by competent adult over 18 years of age until fire is extinguished

  • You may only burn natural wood materials including dry seasoned tree trunks, branches and limbs.

  • Using accelerants such as gasoline, kerosene or any combustible liquids is prohibited.

  • Burning leaves or any other material other than tree cuttings or brush is prohibited

  • Recreational fires (3ft or less in diameter) must be 25 feet from any structure, combustible material and lot lines

  • Bonfires must be 50 feet from any structure, combustible material and lot lines

  • Fires in Portable Outdoor Fireplaces must be 15 feet from any structure, combustible material and lot lines

  • Winds must be below 10 mph

  • You must have means of extinguishment nearby (fire extinguisher, hose, or a shovel with dirt/sand

  • If you are not compliant with the Township Ordinance 95.006, the Fire Department has the authority to issue a municipal civil infraction ticket at their discretion.  Cost of ticket may range up to $500.00

DEFINITIONS

OPEN BURNING

As used in the ordinance is defined as a fire where any material is burned on the ground or in an open receptacle other than a furnace, incinerator, or other equipment connected to a stack or chimney. 

BONFIRE

An outdoor fire utilized for ceremonial purposes.  These are usually large fires that are associated with crowd activity and size is no larger than 6 foot in height and 6 foot in width.

RECREATIONAL FIRE

An outdoor fire burning materials other than rubbish where the fuel being is not contained in an incinerator, outdoor fireplace, portable outdoor fireplace, barbeque grill or barbecue pit and has a total fuel area of 3 feet or less in diameter and 2 feet or less in height for pleasure, religious, ceremonial, cooking, warmth or similar purpose.  

PORTABLE OUTDOOR FIREPLACE

A portable, outdoor, solid-fuel-burning fireplace that may be constructed of steel, concrete, clay or other noncombustible material. A portable outdoor fireplace may be open in design or may be equipped with a small hearth opening and a short chimney or chimney opening in the top.
